Theory of Intellectual Freedom
A systematic account of intellectual freedom as a condition prior to, and more fundamental than, freedom of expression.
This programme develops a philosophical account of intellectual freedom: the capacity of a person and a society to form, revise and defend beliefs without coercion — internal or external. It argues that legal protections for expression are hollow where the underlying conditions of thought are absent.
The work proceeds through three lines of inquiry: the conceptual anatomy of intellectual freedom, its institutional preconditions, and the pathologies that erode it in contemporary societies.
